Before J Dilla started working on his MCA Records debut known as The Diary, Slum Village had found great success with Fan-Tas-Tic, Vol. 2. While the LP memorably connected Jay Dee, Baatin, and T3 with the sounds of Q-Tip, D’Angelo, and DJ Jazzy Jeff, Kurupt was also a sought out guest. Heads know that Dilla Dog loved West Coast Hip-Hop. Beyond his work with Madlib, Visionaries, and The Pharcyde, he enjoyed G-Funk.
More than a dozen years after the album’s creations started, J Dilla’s family and Mass Appeal Records are releasing The Diary on April 15. Within, “Gangsta Boogie” teams Jay with Snoop Dogg and Kokane for a funkdafied celebration of swagger. Dilla’s raps steal the show out of the gate, as Tha Doggfather and Mr. Kane kick some game on the bouncy Funk track.
