Eric Clapton has unveiled the new video for “Spiral,” the latest blues track off the guitar god’s upcoming LP I Still Do. The video takes an animated look through the rocker’s six-decade career in music by reimagining Clapton’s album covers and iconic photos, from Cream, Yardbirds and Slowhand to MTV Unplugged and the Sir Peter Blake-painted artwork for I Still Do.
Clapton’s latest album features a mix of original songs (“Spiral,” “Catch the Blues”) alongside covers of tracks like Robert Johnson’s “Stones in My Passway” and Bob Dylan’s “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine.”
To accompany the arrival of I Still Do on May 20th, VH1 Classic and MTV Live will both premiere a new special, Eric Clapton: I Still Do – An Intimate Discussion About Rock, the Blues and Shepherd’s Pie on the same day the album is out.
I Still Do finds Clapton reuniting with legendary producer Glyn Johns for the first time since the two collaborated on Seventies hits like “Cocaine” and “Wonderful Tonight.” In a recent video interview in support of the album, Clapton and Johns talked about what it was like to work together again and the importance to capture the music live in the studio without relying on overdubs.
“I’ve worked with lots of really good guitar players, and the difference with Eric is he absolutely very rarely – in my experience with him, anyway – sits and figures something out to the nth degree,” Johns said. “Most of it is an emotive response to what he’s hearing around him, to what the song suggests, or whatever else… It goes straight from his heart to his fingers.”
